The 2024 European football season saw Spanish, Italian and Greek teams triumph in the three top-tier European tournaments. However, our data tells a different story about dominance in European club football.
Germany topped our rankings. With 12 Germans featuring in the finals for Champions League winners, Real Madrid, runners-up, Borussia Dortmund, and Europa League runners-up, Bayern Leverkusen, they amassed a points total of 91. So much for the downturn in German football! It would appear that they are in rude health just ahead of hosting the Euros.
Rüdiger and Kroos both earned 10 points in the winning Madrid side, while Dortmund captain, Emre Can, also scored 10 points.
Spain had 7 players in the mix, amassing a total of 62 points, and Italy came in third place with 55 points.
The cosmopolitan nature of top level European football means that there were a total of 31 nations represented in European finals this year.
