1970 Best in Europe: Scotland

1970 saw the closest OTS contest, with Scotland repeating their heroics of 1967 by pipping England to the title by a solitary point. Celtic had their customer full quotient of Scots in the European cup final versus Feyenoord, whilst Arsenal’s defeat of Anderlecht in the Fairs Cup contained five Scots. These included future Highbury boss George Graham (8 points) and soon to be football TV pundit and the Gary Lineker of his day, Bob Wilson.

1970 OTS Best in Europe

Despite Feyenoord European cup victory, their players only appeared in the champions cup final, which meant they finished in third spot. However, this victory was merely a foreshadowing for the Dutch dominance that Europe would see in the coming years.

England’s second spot was secured by way of cup winners cup and fairs cup final victories for Manchester city and arsenal, respectively. In a change very much from today, the Manchester city team was made up purely of Englishman.

A total of eight countries appeared on the 1970s leader table, with an honourable mention going to the first appearance of the democratic republic of Congo. Kialunda of Anderlecht scored 2 points in their defeat to Arsenal.
