1967 Best in Europe: Scotland

66 may have been England’s World Cup year, but in 67 Scotland and Scottish players were taking the high road to football dominance. With a total of 24 Scots playing in European finals this year, the tartan terrors trounced Italy into second place by amassing an OTS points tally of 174 – 80 clear of the Italians.

The Glasgow Finalists

Celtic won the European Cup final 2-1 fielding a team of 11 Scots, with Tommy Gemmell (14 points) and Stevie Chalmers (14 points) scoring versus Inter Milan and topping the OTS Player charts for this year.

Also this year, Rangers made it to the final of the Cup Winner’s Cup where they were to be defeated 1-0 by Bayern Munich in extra time. Rangers fielded a team of 10 Scots and 1 Dane – Kai Johansen (4 points).

And in Europe’s other European final this year, Leeds United – who defeated Kilmarnock in the semi-final – made it to the final of the Inter-City Fairs Cup – only to be beaten by Dynamo Zagreb of Yugoslavia. Leeds United fielded 3 Scots in the final – Billy Bremner (5 points), Eddie Gray and Peter Lorimer (4 points apiece).

Second Place Italians

Italy were runners up, with a points total of 94. All eleven Inter players in the final were Italian (start player and Spaniard Luis Suarez missed the game through injury), with their top scorer being Sandro Mazzola who bagged a penalty in the final.
